The list is 3000 points, and designed to be a generic Von Carstein army. I've already gone through the thinking behind the army on All areas, so here is just a straight run-down of the list:

This is my LotR Dwarf army, built using the Erebor list from Legions- no particular reason, just fits my collection.

Now, the one thing I've found with Dwarves is that they need to synergise. Filling out a list with 1 choice can be good in Tournaments, but across all the scenarios in LotR it can be limiting, so I try and keep a decent spread of models between Warriors and Rangers. A) they are cheap and B) you really don't need anything else!

Although Gimli is tempting, I don't like the idea of always playing a member of the Fellowship- it just puts me in the wrong mindset. So I've taken Balin with Durin's Axe instead. Provides plenty of flavour to the army (especially when my opponent has a Balrog)!

I also tend to split my force into 2 groups, and so I've found that having a few cheap Heroes kicking about to keep them together is useful. That gives me:

Balin- Durin's Axe
Captain- 2-handed Weapon
Captain- Shield

The rest of the list is Banners, Rangers and Warriors.

Warrior- Banner
Warrior- Banner
10 Warriors- Shield
7 Warriors- Dwarf Bow
7 Warriors- 2-handed Weapon
10 Rangers- 2-handed Weapon
9 Rangers- Bow
8 Rangers- Throwing Weapon

That's it! Not a lot I know (3 Heroes, 54 models total) but with a front line of Defence 8, it doesn't need to be! High Fight values are always welcome, and the basic plan usually consists of taking the charge on the Shield Warriors then countering with Rangers. The great Weapon Warriors are there to defend the missile-troops.

This is my current Evil LotR army.

This list is built up of Corsairs of Umbar and Easterlings. Why that combination?- Because this is the faction I play in War of the Ring, and it translates quite nicely into LotR. Now, I don't want any Haradrim- there aren't any in my WotR army, so none in LotR either. Basically, I don't like the models of the Haradrim infantry, and having painted 2 Mumaks for other people, I never want to see another one again. So they're out. On the other hand, the Easterling models are lovely, and Pirates are cool no matter what the game system is.

So what do I take?

Dalamyr, Fleetmaster of Umbar.

Named Heroes help define an army in LotR, so I like to take one in an army just to add a bit of flavour. Couple that with my love of Hasharin, and Dalamyr is a bit of a no-brainer. Plus, Aragorn hates his bombs!

To go with Dalamyr, every fleet needs a Captain and a couple of enforcers, so there's some minor Heroes:

Captain of Umbar- Crossbow
Bo'Sun of Umbar- Crossbow
Bo'Sun of Umbar

That's a few Banners, plenty of Might points and enough Heroes to keep the force unified- now they need followers:

10 Corsairs of Umbar- Spear
10 Corsairs of Umbar- Shield
9 Corsiars of Umbar- Bow

That's the fleet element sorted- everyone has a throwing weapon, plenty of spear defence and good fight values. Of course that's all offset by the fact that they can all be slain by an incontinent Sparrow! Luckily, the second part of my list consists of Easterlings:

Easterling Captain- Halberd
Easterling Warrior- Banner
10 Easterling Warriors- Shield
9 Easterling Warriors- Spear, Shield

And that's 749 points! 5 Heroes, 54 models in total, and a decent spread of stats and abilities. Of course there are a few weaknesses- no Cavalry, no Magic. As I paint up models for these, I'll re-structure the list to reflect it, but right now- all of this is painted and ready to use, and it makes a decent force.

This list is to go with the Space Marine army I'm currently painting.

Now, I've got a Battle Company + of unpainted Marine models kicking about. That means it's about time to put paint to plastic, and get at least a few of these guys table-ready. It also means that this list is less about effectiveness, and more about painting 2000 points of table-ready models that I can throw-down for pick-up games- once I start playing them, I'll be able to paint up new units to play with in the future.

So- what models do I want to paint?

Space Marine Captain on Bike
Ironclad Dreadnought
Terminators
Jump-Pack Librarian

OK- so that gives me a few units to work with, and also gives me pointers as to what else I need to paint. The Librarian will need an escort, so I'll need a 10 man Assault Squad. The Captain allows Bikes as Troops, so a big unit of Bikers can come out to play- 8 Bikers with Attack Bike. The Ironclad will need a Drop Pod, and the Terminators will need a transport- so 1 Land Raider.

At this point, the list is also low on Troops choices (just the Bikers) and it would make sense to paint up at least a few of the Tactical Marines languishing in my Carry Case- so 2 units in Rhino will also go in. Looking at that selection, I'm also going to call the Captain Kor'Sarro Khan (the benefit of personalising my Chapter) and put him on Moon'Drakken. That gives the following:

Kor'Sarro Khan on Moon Drakken
Librarian with Jump Pack
5 Assault Terminator- 3 Lightning Claws, 2 Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield
Ironclad Dreadnought- 2 Heavy Flamers, Assault Grenades, 2 Hunter Killer
Drop Pod
10 Tactical Marines- Missile Launcher, Flamer, Power Sword
Rhino
10 Tactical Marines- Multi-melta, Meltagun, Power Fist
Rhino
8 Bikers- Power Fist, Attack Bike
10 Assault Marines- Flamer, Power Fist
Land Raider

That's a total of 1945 points. Throw in a Multi-melta Attack Bike (because I like them) and throw 5 points on Meltabombs for the Librarian, and it's done! 2K on the nose.

Plan wise- well, every now and again I'll reserve everything and Outflank, sometimes I'll refuse flank; really, this is a flat-out standard Marine army. It is not amazing in any 1 area, but it can cope with many situations- the greatest risk to it is coming up against an optimised list in the hands of an experienced opponent. Then again, that's the fun of it too :)

This is the second companion list for this article, designed to demonstrate a few options for Grey Knights defending in Planetstrike scenarios. I'll assume that the Knights are setting up 3 objectives, all within 18" of each other, in the centre of the battlefield, then rings of difficult/dangerous terrain moving outwards. Also, No-Man's land between 24" and 36" from the centre of the board (optimum range for the Grey Knights to react.

So, what are the 666th Chapter bringing to the party if they have to stand around and watch the enemy appear? For a start, 3 Lascannons on Interception platforms. most of the Grey Knights units can't take anti-tank, so these will be invaluable. In addition, we know there are 3 Stratagem points to spend, so the Grey Knights also have Force Pylons to take advantage of any Deep-Strike mishaps, and Escape Hatch in case the enemy get too close.

On to the army itself- we need 2 Troops and a HQ, we can take lots of Heavy Support, and Interceptor Squads are our friend. Let's have a look at what comes out of that-

Librarian: Sanctuary, Summoning, Psybolt Ammo

10 Strike Squad: 2 Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo
10 Strike Squad: 2 Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo

5 Interceptor: Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo
5 Interceptor: Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo
5 Interceptor: Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo

That's 1125 points, leaving 375 and plenty of Heavy Support slots.

Nemesis Dreadknight: Heavy Incinerator
Nemesis Dreadknight: Heavy Incinerator

Another 320 points down, and not many places to spend the extra. Although an Inquisitor is available, 1 of them probably won't be much cop, so the extra is probably better spent on a few extra Interceptors to flesh out the squads:

2 Interceptors

Bringing us to the grand total of 1498 points.

The Plan- set up a unit of Interceptors in each of the objective fortresses. Have the 2 Strike Squads deploy with the 2 smaller Interceptor units, and the Librarian deploy in the 7 man. The 2 Dreadknights deploy in the centre point of the 3 objectives. If the enemy is going to win, they will have to wade thorough difficult and dangerous terrain (thanks to the Warpquake power which you are casting every turn), or Deep Strike and lose 2/3 of their units to mishaps (thanks to the Warpquake power which you are casting every turn.) All the while, all that lovely Grey Knight shooting will be poring down on them. If a unit gets into trouble, it can either use the Escape Hatch, or the Librarians Summoning- the Grey Knights greatest strength is mobile firepower, may as well play to your advantages :)

OK, this list is designed to go with this article, to link up with some of the ideas in there.

Let's pick up on the idea of a rapid-assault Alpha Strike type force, using plenty of Elites. The point of this force will be to drop onto the table, assault straight away, then mop up whatever's left.

So who's going to lead this force? Well, let's have a Grand Master and a Librarian.

Grand Master: 2 Servo-Skulls, Rad Grenades, Psybolt Ammo
Librarian: Might of Titan, Vortex of Doom, Mastery 3

That gives us some fairly good utility characters. We still need some units to go with them, and really these guys would only wander around with Terminator support:

5 Terminators: Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo
5 Terminators: Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo

That doesn't leave alot for the rest of the army. Deep Striking units are going to be the focus here, so Interceptor squads are favourite:

5 Interceptors: Incinerator, 2 Daemon Hammers, Warding Stave
5 Interceptors: Incinerator, 2 Daemon Hammers, Warding Stave
5 Interceptors: Incinerator, 2 Daemon Hammers, Warding Stave

All of which brings us up to 1490 points. 10 points to kill- give the Grand Master Meltabombs and Blind Grenades.

That's 1500 points!

So what's the plan? Well, depending on how many objectives the defender sets up, one Strategem should definitely be Gremlin Curse (unless there are no Fortresses/Bunkers, in Which case go with Dawn Assault), and Phase-Field Generator a close second. The Librarian and Grand Master are the bunker-breakers, and Hammerhand will probably come in useful. For those bunkers that can't be broken, use the Incinerators to do D6 flamer hits on the units inside.

Everything in the list can assault on the turn it comes down, and with wise selection of Landing Zone will be in range of the Servo Skulls. It's a "shock and awe" list- arrive, murder the enemy, cook supper using their slowly cremating remains.

This is the Spearhead list for this article, designed to show off some of the Grey Knight armoury. It focuses on taking out enemy armour and mobility, which are interesting challenges within the Codex. It will also use Spearhead formations, so it's probably worthwhile downloading the rules here (you will need to register a Games Workshop account, if you haven't already.)

One of the great things about Spearhead is that nothing is compulsory, so all of the points can be spent wherever you like! For that reason, it's worth taking a long, hard look at the HQ's to decide if they really are a necessary part of the battle plan. In fact, there is only one "compulsory" choice in my mind for the Grey Knights- the Mechanised Assault Spearhead:

Land Raider- multi melta

Land Raider- multi melta

Land Raider- multi melta

5 Terminators- 2 Daemon Hammer

5 Terminators- 2 Daemon Hammer

5 Terminators- 2 Daemon Hammer

OK- that's a fair chunk of points! In fact, there's only 545 points left! However, that unit will come on turn 1 from Outflank, fire 3 Twin-linked Lascannons from moving at combat speed, a further 3 Twin-linked Lascannons from Power of the Machine Spirit and then 3 Multi-melta from being a Spearhead. All at different targets if necessary. That's 9 Targets reliably engaged into their side or rear armour. Any tanks left, can either be assaulted by the Force-Bane-Thunder Hammers of the Terminators, or any Infantry revealed are going to be assaulted. The trick will be to engage vehicles at range with the guns- pick the targets furthest away, then work inwards- your assault can work outwards!

Right, what else do the Grey Knights need? Well, looking at the Missions, 2 of them require that objectives are held- shouldn't be a problem. The other requires that scoring units (Vehicles, Walkers, Troops, Spearheads) finish the game in the enemy deployment zone. So all we really need to do is support the Mechanised Assault. To do this, those units need 2 of the following- range, durability, speed. That rules out a few things, but does leave 2 interesting options:

Monstrous Spearhead, made up of Nemesis Dreadknights

Skystorm Spearhead, of Storm Raven and infantry.

Personally, I don't think that the Dreadknights be will much use in this environment, due to the firepower that enemy can put out in Spearhead and the fact that they'd be the only thing starting on the board, so the Skystorm it is:

Storm Raven: Multi-melta

10 Purifier- Daemonhammer, 3 Psycannon, Psybolt Ammo

That's 2000 points on the nose! So, 2 formations, 1 is guaranteed to arrive turn 1 from outflank and (hopefully!) murder a fair portion of the enemy force, the other is your late-game objective grabber, or gap-filler if you need it. Also, if your opponent has brought a Horde unit or army, use the Purifiers to maximum effect- 3 Psycannon and Cleansing Flame will put paid to even the strongest mob (don't forget the Storm Raven's missiles either!)

The Plan- Hold everything in reserve, turn 1 the Mechanised Assault squadron comes on from the flank and puts paid to a fair whack of the enemy (engaging, potentially, 9 separate armoured units at range!) before assaulting with 15 Terminators. The Skystorm formation provides an attack of opportunity, or an objective grab when they arrive. Simple!

Comments, as always, are welcome.
Tenzinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02163786341016488803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2158524893180909795.post-1395120791223366182011-05-07T07:31:00.000-07:002011-05-07T07:40:19.068-07:001600 Points Celtic List- WAB

Hi all,

OK, here's an army list using the Barbarian list from Warhammer Ancients Battle 2nd Ed Core Rulebook.

Why 1600 points? It just happens to be what size we play locally. No idea why, but there we go.

OK- using the method described here, let's begin!

Theme: well, this list is aiming at representing a mental image of Celts and Barbarians, instead of being a representative Celt, Dacian, Germanic etc list. There are other Sourcebooks which represent these far more accurately: notably Fall of the West and Shieldwall. So the theme is fairly loose- lots of Warriors of different Chieftains, with Cavalry, Chariot and Skirmishers. I do like the idea that each unit of Warriors is led by a Chieftain, so that's going in as well!

Favourites: OK, I'm a sucker for Chariots. This applies to all Games Systems- if there's a chance for a Chariot in the list, I'll do my damnedest to squeeze it in! So there's definitely going to be Chariots in this list:

3 Chariots with Thrusting Spear (+1S on the charge)
Chieftain with Thrusting Spear and Light Armour in Chariot.

That's 231 points. Plenty left :)

Compulsories: With Barbarians, there are definitely 2 Characters which are "Compulsory." Warlords and Battle Standard Bearers. You don't have to take them, but you are at a serious disadvantage if you don't- Ld:5 Troops need all the support they can get!

Quick note- for those that aren't aware, Barbarians get +1 Ld per rank bonus in the unit. This means that units in range of the Warlord are Ld 10. Those out of range will be Ld 8. Cavalry, Chariots etc CANNOT GET A RANK BONUS - it's only for infantry, and certain specialist units (Companion Cavalry, the Crusader lists etc.) So Warlords and Battle Standards are fairly crucial to keep your line together, or at least rallying when they run.

Warlord with Light Armour, Shield and Javelins
Battle Standard

Remaining Compulsories- well, the list forces us to take 1/3 of the army as Warriors. That's 534 points. Well the good news is that Barbarian Warriors are 5 points each and are Warband (so they can auto-break enemy.) they can also get the full +3 Rank Bonus. Units of these guys are going to be BIG:

Plan: OK, this army has a few things going for it. The units will probably outnumber most enemy, and Chieftains can pump out a hefty weight of damage in combat. These are important, because if a Warband outnumbers it's enemy and wins combat, then the enemy auto-breaks (Unless they are Stubborn, Drilled, Trained or otherwise share Roman traits!) Your units should get there thanks to decent Ld, and worst comes to worst they have Javelins, so can try a little desultory shooting at Skirmish Screens. Basic plan- pick an enemy unit, shout "Freedom," and get into combat with it!

There are certain things that every WAB army will have to consider- Cavalry and Skirmishers. if you can get an advantage in either of these areas, then you can really put your opponent under pressure. So let's see what can be done in these areas for Barbarians:

Skirmishers: Barbarian Skirmishers are not very good. Most things will hit them on 3's, and thanks to the lack of ranks they will almost certainly run (Skirmishers can never use the Generals Ld.) On the other hand, they are 4 point Slingers...

15 Skirmisher with Sling
15 Skirmisher with Sling

This should be enough to hold any rough terrain, where the enemies ranks won't count, and they can really hammer enemy up close with 30 shots per unit. Great against Roman Legionaries, with their 6" march :)

That just leaves us with Cavalry to consider. Chariots come out of this allowance, so we've already spent a fair whack of it. The only other things are Noble Cavalry and Light Cavalry. Now, neither of these units will get a Rank Bonus, so they aren't frontal chargers. Noble Cavalry can get a 4+ save, which is respectable, but they are 29 points a model, which isn't. In this list, I'm going to go Light Cavalry heavy- the biggest reason, really, is that so far it looks like a collection of villages coming together under the leadership of an inspiring leader, and having a huge block of village leaders without their Peons just doesn't feel right.

5 Light Cavalry

Bringing us up to a total of 606 points on Characters, 660 points on Warriors, 240 points on Cavalry and 120 points on Skirmish- overall, 1626 points, and 72 points over on Characters. So a Chieftain has to go, bringing it down to 1551 points overall, and allowing an extra few Light Cavalry and Skirmishers to be squeezed in:

2 Light Cavalry (1 for each unit)
6 Skirmishers with Sling (break the Skirmishers into 3 units of 12)

And now the list is finished, let's take a look:

As it's finished, the list will need to be careful about enemy Cavalry and Skirmishers, where it can be overwhelmed, but if those to battles are won then you can really harass the enemy lines while the real threat advances- 4 blocks of hard hitting Warband that can simply smash through the opponents lines. A quick mention of the Chariots- these are probably the best option for countering enemy heavy cavalry, since the unit pushes out 6 S:4 attacks and 3 S:5 attacks when it charges. However, if that attack doesn't work, you are in quite serious trouble, as Heavy Cavalry in the flank will give you a serious headache.

One final treat: how much would this list cost in models? Well, that's 120 Infantry, 36 Slingers, 12 Light Cavalry, 3 Chariot, 1 Character in Chariot and 3 Chieftains, General and Battle Standard on foot. Well, if you buy 1 Chariot-Queen, 3 Chariot, 3 Command Boxes, 1 box of Celtic Cavalry, and 4 boxes of Warriors you get everything you need.

This army list relates directly to the post here about 2-point defence strategy. This time, with a Warhammer fantasy light-infantry army- the Beastmen.

Quick re-cap: Beastmen have the advantage of cheap T:4 infantry, lots of monsters and Ambush. They don't have high armour saves, fearless units or shooting. This makes them, at first glance, a poor candidate for the 2-Point strategy, so lets see what they can do?

First up- the Bunker formations. Reminder: these need to be durable and have a wide threat range. With no shooting, and little armour, what can the Beastmen provide? Well, lets do a run-down of potential candidates:

Shamans- the Beasts may not have bows or guns, but they do have magic in abundance! the bunkers could house some potent casting, and therefore become a threat in the magic phase. However, magic in Fantasy 8th Ed has a fierce reputation, so this may move the opponents target priorties from 5 group elements to just 2- the bunkers. It would definitely be a gamble.

Bestigor- T:4, Heavy armour and M:5. The threat from this unit comes in the fact that they can charge a good distance, and are s:6 with their Great Weapons in combat. Their mere presence will be a large enough threat for your opponent to be wary of them, and hopefully try to avoid them. this will mean that the bunkers are no longer static formations- instead, they will move up-field, and hopefully force the enemy to engage in combat when and where you want. However, this moves slowly away from 2-Point-Defence, and the whole purpose of the strategy is to keep things simple for you and difficult for your opponent- reversing those two criteria is probably not a good idea.

Ghorgon- big monster, W:6, T:6, Ld:10 Stubborn. These guys can hang around where-ever the hell they like, and your opponent will be "concerned". However, the same Pro's and Con's apply to this beast as apply to the Bestigor.

Chaos Spawn- Hmmm; cheap, T:5, W:3 and Unbreakable. In numbers, these guys are dangerous enough to threaten most units, and in small units they are mobile enough to support each other. Plus, with random movement, they can engage enemy units that other Beast units can't (since they aren't restricted to a 90 degree forward LoS.)

So- the Chaos Spawn look like favourites for the Bunkers. Their main problem is that they may not provide a particularly tempting target- so add in a couple of the Bray-Shamans.

4 Chaos Spawn

Bray-Shaman: Level 2

4 Chaos Spawn

Bray-Shaman: Level 2

Ok- 640 points spent. That leaves over 1800 points for the 3 battle groups- 600 points each. Let's see what can be done with that.

The Battle Groups need to be mobile and self-supporting, remaining deadly enough to overcome an enemy when they engage. It should be noted that there is only 205 points available from Rare, and the list still needs 625 points of Core. Potential Candidates:

Gor Herds- the mainstay of a Beast army, cheap and tough- unfortunately not that killy.

Chariots- it's always tempting with a Beast army to go Chariot heavy. However, that's a seperate list. Chariots tend to be 1-shot, and once they've done their job it's difficult to get them back into line. One or two to deal with skirmishers and launch attacks of opportunity, maybe?

Minotaurs- these fit pretty ideally into the role required- plus big units of Minotaurs always look terryfing as they Moo their way towards the enemy.

Bestigor- all the reasons these guys don't make good bunkers, are all the reasons that they make great offensive battle-group units. The problem is, they won't be big units, and Many Small Units isn't really ideal- although there is always the possibilty of Ambush.

Razorgor- fast, tough and hard-hitting. Unfortunately they compete with Minotaurs- the trade-off? Razorgor have +1M, +1T, +1A. Minotaurs have +1WS, +1I, +1Ld, Impact hits and the ability to carry gear.

That's it- nothing else really fits. Let's take a quick look at characters before making any decisions:

The list is already strong magically, and there are two fantastic utility characters in the Beasts book that will be a great help in putting the hurts on enemy units- Malagor the dark Omen and Slugtongue. Malagor just keeps getting better as you cast spells thanks to his cumulative +1 to cast, and he can take from Lore of the Wild, Beasts, death and Shadow- whichever you pick, that's a fair number of movement and disruption spells for your Beasts to take advantage of. Slugtongue just deploys on a flank, and any enemy in front of him start taking damage at the start of the game, making your life significantly easier.

Malagor

Slugtongue

Ok- onto the units. The rules require that there are 625 points of Gor units (we've already ruled out the Ungor) and Chariots. So:

3 Chariots

30 Gor- musician, standard, Additional Hand Weapon

30 Gor- musician, standard, Additional Hand Weapon

30 Gor- musician, standard, Additional Hand Weapon

Ok- in total so far: 2035 pts. There's 2 pretty tough bunkers, lots of magic offence and defence and 3 horde battle-groups with Chariot support. Taking a look at the list again, there's 3 options for the remaining 465 points, and luckily they are all Special- where no points have been spent so far! So what can we afford?

So, how would this work? Well, there is one thing to bear in mind- large portions of this list can become frenzied over time. This means that you will have to be careful to not get pulled around the battlefield. Chariots help control the movement of Frenzied Gors (just stick them in the Gor's front arc, then they can't charge, and flee the Chariot from any enemy. ) The best way, however, is to be careful about where and when you charge. This list can seriously weaken an opponent in the magic phase, and after a few turns of being pelted with sorcerous blasts the last thing they will need is 30 Gors hitting them in the face with 3 attacks each in frenzy.

If you commit 1 of the groups , make sure the other two are covering the bunkers, and that at least one of them can go in to support them next turn. Never commit 2 groups! Ideally, commit all 3 in turn and turn the enemy force into meaty chunks in gravy for your Spawn to mop up.

Hi all,

This list relates directly to the 2-point defence strategy I talked about here

So if the Theme is 2-point defence, then we need to start with 2 "Bunkers." As the article points out, they need to be survivable, and have a large threat range. That leaves us with a few options:

Support Weapon Platforms. With a Warlock, these can be pretty tough- however, I'd favour D-cannons for their ability to shoot without Line of Sight (LoS), the problem being that they are short-ranged. However, worth baring in mind.

Wraithlords are pretty tough, and with 36" range weapons fit into the needs quite neatly.

Rangers (Pathfinders) in cover are incredibly tough to winkle out, short of Flamers or Whirlwinds. Baring in mind that there's 3 "Army Groups" protecting them, then they are passable.

Guardians in large numbers with a Warlock and Conceal can be quite durable. Including a Support Weapon gives them an (albeit limited) extended threat range.

That's it! well, it is an Eldar army- this isn't exactly what they're meant to be good at :) So, what's going into the list?

5 Pathfinders
5 Pathfinders
Wraithlord- Missile Launcher, Wraithsword
Wraithlord- Missile Launcher, Wraithsword
(1 group each of Pathfinders and Wraithlord)

It's Eldar, they're expensive, so that'll have to do- we're at 490 points, leaving 1510 for the 3 mobile groups which are going to keep these groups alive.

The key focus here is Mobility and Effectiveness. If a group shoots at or assaults a target, that target has to die. Being quick is something Eldar excel at, but effectiveness- well, let's see :)

Farseers increase the power of nearby Eldar units through their Psychics- but Psychic powers are less reliable in 5th Ed than they were.

Autarchs open up the option of reliable Reserves, and have a decent amount of damage output in the right place. In fact, leading Aspects or Guardians, they can effectively tip unit from "not bad" to "good!" Plus of course, this list still needs an HQ.

Fire Dragons murder enemy elites and tanks in short order- they are, as in all Eldar armies, pretty much compulsory.

Guardian Jetbikes with Shuriken Cannons fulfil both roles, and even better they are Troops so can Turbo-boost to grab objectives, or re-deploy to cover a retreat, force the enemy to slow down etc. In fact, in this kind of list, they are amazing.

Warp Spiders have good saves, and the 2d6" assault move can come in handy, but a 12" range might limit their effectiveness here- still, worthy of consideration.

Vyper Jetbikes have good damage output, and can keep up with the Guardian Jetbikes. They are, however, fragile unless they are made hellish expensive.

Fire Prisms with Holo-fields fit the list perfectly- but 2 Heavy Support slots are already taken for the bunkers,l so only one would be available.

Night Spinners are amazing in this list- the ability to shut off areas of the battlefield and stay mobile is incredibly powerful. However, 1 of them by itself will quickly become a target.

So- those are the options. Let's see what can be done- each army group can comfortably spend 500 points, so there's room to play around a little.

8 Fire Dragons
Wave Serpent- Twin Eldar Missile Launchers, Spirit Stones
8 Fire Dragons
Wave Serpent- Twin Eldar Missile Launchers, Spirit Stones
Autarch- Fusion Gun, Power Weapon
6 Jetbikes- 2 Shuriken Cannon
6 Jetbikes- 2 Shuriken Cannon
6 Jetbikes- 2 Shuriken Cannon
6 Jetbikes- 2 Shuriken Cannon
Night Spinner- Holo-field, Spirit Stones

That brings the Army Groups up to 1374 points, for a total of 1864. Heavy Support and Troops are full, there's nothing else in Elites or HQ that would be useful (other than another Autarch?!?- don't fancy it) so Fast Attack is the plum spot. Looking at the list above, there's only Warp Spiders and Vypers to consider.

Warp Spiders are good (I'm a big fan of them), but an effective unit of them would eat up more points than are available, so they are (unfortunately) out. Leaving us with:

Vyper Jetbike- Shuriken Cannon, Spirit Stones
Vyper Jetbike- Shuriken Cannon, Spirit Stones

120 points for the pair- giving a total of 1984 points. This means that the Autarch can afford Mandi-blasters, and the list is done. Here it is:

Bunker 1- 245 points

5 Pathfinders
Wraithlord: Wraithsword, Missile Launcher

Bunker 2- 245 points

5 Pathfinders
Wraithlord: Wraithsword, Missile Launcher

Army Group 1- 510 points

8 Fire Dragons
Autarch- Mandiblasters, Fusion Gun, Power Weapon
Wave Serpent- Twin Missile Launchers, Spirit-Stones
6 Jetbikes- 2 Shuriken Cannon

Army Group 2- 410 points

8 Fire Dragons

Wave Serpent- Twin Missile Launchers, Spirit-Stones

6 Jetbikes- 2 Shuriken Cannon

Army Group 3- 584 points

6 Jetbikes- 2 Shuriken Cannon
6 Jetbikes- 2 Shuriken Cannon
Vyper- Shuriken Cannon, Spirit Stone
Vyper- Shuriken Cannon, Spirit Stone
Night Spinner- Holo-field, Spirit Stone.

Total- 1994 points

Here's a deployment map (can you tell I'm playing with my new Vassal toy at the moment? :) )

So there's a large group in the centre, and two reasonably strong flanks. Usually, the first move will push into the enemies forward units and annihilate them- at this point, the Jetbikes need to use their move to get back and block the LoS to the Bunkers. Doing this, the WraithlordJetbikes around- if they are keeping the bunkers alive, they are doing their job.

Also note that the 2 Jetbike units in the centre can either fire off 12 S6 shots at an enemy (plus Catapults) or peel off to either flank, to support a thrust or cover a re-deployment (Eldar never retreat!)

Here's an example:

Well, that's all for this list.

Hi all,

This list is the result of me seeing if it was possible! Basically, can you represent Space Marine Battle Companies outside of Apocalypse?

In this list, most of it is going to be tied in to theme and compulsary choices based on that theme. There is no room for any personal favourites... So, on with the list.

(For those who don't know, a Space Marine Battle Company is Captain, Apothecary, Standard, Chaplain, 6*10 man Tactical Squads, 2*10 man Assault Squads, 2*10 man Devastator Squads, Ancillaries.)

Lets start with the bare bones- no gear, no equipment unless it's free.

Captain
Command Squad- Banner
Chaplain
10 Tactical Marines- Missile Launcher, Flamer
10 Tactical Marines- Missile Launcher, Flamer
10 Tactical Marines- Missile Launcher, Flamer
10 Tactical Marines- Missile Launcher, Flamer
10 Tactical Marines- Missile Launcher, Flamer
5 Assault Marines
5 Assault Marines
5 Devastators
5 Devastators

That's 1730 points. Wow- 87 Marines on the board, and 270 points spare!

First stop- back to favourites! I love the Jump Pack Chaplain model, so the Chaplain gets one. Also, no Captain is complete without a Power Sword.

Next, I'll go back to theme- the Devastators and Command Squad deserve transports. 2 Rhino's (no extra armour) and a Razorback. Also, the Devastators need heavy weapons- 3 Heavy Bolters a-piece. That brings us up, rather neatly, to 1960 points. Enough left to buy each of the assault Sergeants a Power weapon, and each HQ meltabombs.

And that's it! Really quick list, but it's got a bit of everything. Anti-tank, anti-horde, disruption, scoring, baiting- it's all possible. Just not very quickly :)

I reckon this list's a 5 out of 10. I would only ever use it as a fun kick about list in a pre-arranged game. Against any reliable opposition, the army will fold in on itself like an Eldar with dysentry.

Hi all,

This is the Pedro Kantor list I ran for a while- a themed list, designed to be competitive but not tournament capable. It's themed around a small elite strike force, with plenty of pound per square inch. I also built it use my first Land Raider (Godhammer pattern), which seemed appropriate.

So- first up we have:

Pedro Kantor
Land Raider- extra armour.

That's 440 points! At least it gives me an HQ....

On to the units I have to take. I've got the HQ, but he's going to need a unit to accompany him, and then there's the 2 Tactical squads. Since the army is shaping up to be mobile, they are going to be full squads in Rhino's.

5 Assault Terminators- 2 Thunder Hammer Storm Shields, 3 Lightning Claws.
10 Tactical Marines- Meltagun, Multi-melta, Power Fist
10 Tactical Marines- Flamer, Missile Launcher, Power Weapon.
2 Rhino- Extra Armour.

So what are we up to now? well, it's 685 points on top of the 440, so that's... By all the God's, that's 1125 points.

Well, that's Theme, Favourites and Compulsaries done- time for a plan! (For an explanation of that last sentence, go here )

So far, there's a hammer unit (Pedro, Terminators, Land Raider) and 2 scoring units, which are fairly mobile. these should stay within 6" of each, to cross support and benefit from Pedro's Inspiring Presence. The rest of the army needs to support this- mobility will be key, and whatever units are added will need to have a decent threat bubble, in case any units become isolated from the whole. What's missing? Well, the army needs the following-

2 more scoring units (I hate running less than 4)
Anti-tank
Anti-horde
Disruption.

What fills the gaps? Well, thanks to Pedro, Sternguard can score. With combi-meltas they are an effective anti-tank unit, they can wheedle enemy out of cover thanks to the Ammunition, and if they are in range of the Inspiring Presence, each of them will get 3 attacks. Since a few units covers a lot of holes, I'll take 2 units of 5 in Razorbacks- these I'll leave with Heavy Bolter, to rattle off accurate ant-horde firepower.

5 Sternguard- Power Weapon, 3 Combi-melta
5 Sternguard- Power Weapon, 3 Combi-melta
2 Razorbacks- Extra Armour.

That's another 420 points, which brings the total up to 1545 points. It's still a bit light on anti-tank, but Attack Bikes and Land Speeders are decent disruption units, so how about:

2 Attack Bike- Multi-melta
Land Speeder- Heavy Flamer, Multi-melta
Land Speeder- Heavy Flamer, Multi-melta

Again, each unit is covering a few of the assigned roles. It's close to the total now though- 1785 points in total. Most of the bases are covered, and a bit of Psychic defence is always nice- no gear, just Null Zone and Might of the Ancients (in case he gets stuck in combat). There's not a lot of list left- Predators are always a cheap, welcome addition:

Librarian- Null Zone, Might of the Ancients
Predator- Autocannon, 2 Heavy Bolters.

That's 1970 points- 30 left. So- add in a bit of gear, or take it away? Well, I'd have to cut away extra armour, and I don't really want to do that, so the Predator can get Extra armour, and the Librarian can carry a Combi-flamer (making him an all-round utility character)- that's 30 points! 2k bang on the nose.

To summarize, the list finishes up looking like this:

Pedro Kantor
Librarian- Null Zone, Might of the Ancients, Combi-flamer
5 Assault Terminators- 2 Thunder Hammer/ Storm Shield, 3 Lightning Claws
5 Sternguard- Power Weapon, 3 Combi-melta
- In a Razorback- Heavy Bolters, Extra Armour

If everything stays within 12" of Pedro (14" if he's in the Land Raider!) then that +1 Attack should be murderous. Everyone's Stubborn, so units will stick around long enough to be rescued, allowing you to bait with the Marines and the Terminators. 4 Scoring units (6 if you combat squad) gives a dgree of freedom on the Battlefield, and most enemy armour should suffer at the hands of all the melta in the list. Plus, on the off chance that your opponent brings Orks or Tyranids, the flamers, Heavy flamers, and 77 S4./S56 Bolter shots should give them something to think about.

The criteria are all rated 0-3. 0 shows absolutely no ability in that area- so Venomthropes and Alexander's Companions score 0. A score of 1 shows that they can perform, but they're not great at it. 2 is the average. 3 indicates that the unit is awesome in this area.

Note that the various criteria are not fixed- I'll add more as I see fit, and remove some if necessary. I recently had to make a list for a first-wave Tyranid Assault- lots of Gaunts and Gargoyles, very few anything else, no Monstrous Creatures. This meant that the matrix focused more on swarm elements, so Ranged Attack and Survivability were removed in favour of Synapse and Numbers. Tournament lists, due to the restrictions and wide variety of obstacles you can face, have a lot more columns.

At this point I'll have a finished list, and all I need to to is make sure that I've got the models, and that they're painted, with a suitable mode of transport. I'm not saying this is THE way to build a list (that would just be arrogant.) However, there will be over the coming months various lists appearing from me, and I reckon it's useful that people can see the thought processes I go through when I'm putting them together. Interestingly, it doesn't matter what game I'm playing- I still go through the same routine.
